How to remove audio background noise easily.

Studio microphone in close-up

Audiences forgive grain. They never forgive hiss.

Viewers will watch a slightly soft image without complaint, but thirty seconds of humming dialogue and they are gone. Clean sound is not a post-production trick — it is an on-set discipline with a small cleanup chain at the end.

Kill the noise before you record it

Walk the location with your ears first. Fridges, air conditioning, neon ballasts, traffic outside the window — unplug, switch off or reposition before the first take. Record thirty seconds of room tone at every setup; your future editor will thank you by name.

Get the microphone close

Every centimeter between the mic and the mouth doubles the room in your recording. A lav hidden well plus a boom overhead covers nearly everything. If you only have a camera mic, move the camera closer — the framing problem is easier to solve than the noise problem.

The cleanup chain that actually works

Level first, then a gentle high-pass around 80 Hz, then a single pass of noise reduction using your room tone as the profile. Small moves, in that order. If you are reaching for heavy processing, the recording was the problem — plan the re-shoot or the ADR line now, not at delivery.
